2009 Ultimate Fuel Cell Technology Guide: Clean Energy for Cars, Trucks, Power Generation - Government Research and Production Plans, Fuel Cell Handbook (CD-ROM)

2009 Ultimate Fuel Cell Technology Guide: Clean Energy for Cars, Trucks, Power Generation - Government Research and Production Plans, Fuel Cell Handbook (CD-ROM)

This comprehensive electronic book on CD-ROM provides the most authoritative sources available on fuel cell technology, with complete reproductions of dozens of government documents about fuel cell research and technology, with material from the Energy Department, the Defense Department, and NASA. Two prominent publications include the Fuel Cell Handbook and the 2007 Office of Fossil Energy and National Energy Technology Laboratory Fuel Cell Program Annual Report. Fuel cells are one of the cleanest and most efficient technologies for generating electricity. Since there is no combustion, there are none of the pollutants commonly produced by boilers and furnaces. For systems designed to consume hydrogen directly, the only products are electricity, water and heat. Fuel cells are an important technology for a potentially wide variety of applications including on-site electric power for households and commercial buildings; supplemental or auxiliary power to support car, truck and aircraft systems; power for personal, mass and commercial transportation; and the modular addition by utilities of new power generation closely tailored to meet growth in power consumption. These applications will be in a large number of industries worldwide. The Seventh Edition of the Fuel Cell Handbook includes Solid State Energy Conversion Alliance Program (SECA) activities. In addition, individual fuel cell technologies and other supporting materials have been updated. Finally, an updated index assists the reader in locating specific information quickly. Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert chemical energy in fuels into electrical energy directly, promising power generation with high efficiency and low environmental impact. Because the intermediate steps of producing heat and mechanical work typical of most conventional power generation methods are avoided, fuel cells are not limited by thermodynamic limitations of heat engines such as the Carnot efficiency. In addition, because combustion is avoided, fuel cells produce power with minimal pollutant. However, unlike batteries the reductant and oxidant in fuel cells must be continuously replenished to allow continuous operation. Fuel cells bear significant resemblance to electrolyzers. In fact, some fuel cells operate in reverse as electrolyzers, yielding a reversible fuel cell that can be used for energy storage. Though fuel cells could, in principle, process a wide variety of fuels and oxidants, of most interest today are those fuel cells that use common fuels (or their derivatives) or hydrogen as a reductant, and ambient air as the oxidant. Most fuel cell power systems comprise a number of components: Unit cells, in which the electrochemical reactions take place. Stacks, in which individual cells are modularly combined by electrically connecting the cells to form units with the desired output capacity. Balance of plant which comprises components that provide feedstream conditioning (including a fuel processor if needed), thermal management, and electric power conditioning among other ancillary and interface functions. Contents of the Program Report include: Coal-based Systems, Cost Reduction, Research and Development, Materials and Manufacturing, Fuel Processing, Power Electronics, Modeling and Simulation, Balance of Plant, Advanced Research, Acronyms and Abbreviations, much more.

It was a nice day, temp in the 70's, and I decided to try to remove some scooter meet dirt from my 1947 Cushman model 52. It looked so good I decided to remove a few layers of grime from the car. Then they both looked so good I had to take a picture.

I also washed the truck, but by then I was too tired to lift a camera.

1 year young

1 year young

23lbs & 34 inches long.

1 year old. How did we get here? How did we make it?
It felt so effortless & yet so full of struggles & complications.
I think that's part of parenthood...feeling the obstacles like
they're the world resting on your shoulders & then looking
back & wondering how the days slipped by so quickly.

You're fantastic. I don't know if any other word could
describe you so well at this point in time. You're full
of life & love & giggles & hugs. You are trying to run
like the wind, but it's more like a gust. You stumble,
you do indeed fall...but you always pick yourself up,
& usually with a smile on your face. You rarely cry.
Well, REALLY cry....there are sometimes fake sobs
& tears to get a little love, but nobody seems to mind.

You like garbage cans & metal bows. Paper & shoes.
You like to sit on the little green shag rug in your room
& yank at it until the little fuzzy fibers are clumped in
your hands [much to mama's dismay]. You also love
stealing your clean diapers & wipes & running around
the house with them. & when you smile, your big wide
smile that could melt ANY heart, your little chiclet tooth
is like a pearl inside an oyster, glinting & gleaming. It
soon won't be alone, as you have your second tooth
appearing right beside it!

You still nap twice a day & sleep pretty good at night.
Your on whole milk now & are trying out some new
foods. Your favorite new yummies are whole wheat
toast with organic jam, whole grain goldfish crackers
& fig newtons!

We're over the moon to be your parents, buddy. We
look at you everyday & marvel at your energy, your
playfulness, your happiness. You blow up our hearts
like a balloon...& just when we think no more air/love
can fit, it fills a little more.

I can't imagine life without you. My monkey, my little
man, my miracle.

I was dreading do this. Finally I realized that there was a dust free way for me to cut these holes in my ceiling. What you don't see in this photo is that I am doing this over top of a suede sofa, shag rug, curious dog, and moody pregnant wife. This had better work!

I used a clear bag from the dry cleaner and a 12 inch quilting ring to make a dust catcher. Then I put my 18 volt jigsaw inside the bag and held the ring tight against the ceiling while I cut. The camera doesn't see very clearly what I am doing, but with proper lighting I could easily see the saw blade and the line I had to follow through the bag.

  • Housekeeping or housecleaning is the systematic process of making a home neat and clean in approximately that order. This may be applied more broadly than just to an individual home, or as a metaphor for a similar "clean up" process applied elsewhere such as a procedural reform.

I had a MAJOR pantry pest infestation. I rarely get them because most of the jars I use are the wire bail hermetically sealing jars- nothing can get into them that you don't put in there yourself. But, as you see, I do have a few things in screw top jars as well. The wire bail jars are very sturdy, last almost forever, but are quite $$. Because we are about to go into heavy budgeting and because we are buying a lot more bulk foods, I splurged and bought a bunch of new big wire bail jars and plenty of replacement gaskets.

I cleaned out everything in the pantry, washed the shelves, got rid of things that were either invaded or just too old, cleaned dirty jars, filled up new ones, and now there's not a bug in there and everything is in good condition.

I love how that feels.

Hang in there...

Hang in there...

This light fixture, although altered, is original to the house. It lit the maid's room, which is situated over the kitchen. A narrow, dark stairway descends into the kitchen - which is surprisingly small. Considering how much more they cooked back then (though not much more than today's society, believe it or not) it is a wonder anything got done.

The maid's name was Julia. She was only in the house for a short time, and after she left the house, it is said that Captain Pritchard moved into this room.

The wallpaper that hangs on the walls is original. There was once a border, but it has been lost to various means. The hardwood floor was covered with blue and natural straw mats, which are still in excellent condition and are currently rolled up in the room, waiting to be cleaned gently, and then cover the floors once again.

Here is a look at some of my newest pieces. They are all in random stages of completion. Some further along than others. I have, I think, 7 or 8 started and I wanted to complete 10 for the show. Odds are that I'm gonna do one big one and one smallish one to round it out. I'm pretty happy with the progress. I've taken what I did last year with the strippers and included some of what I did in college and following with the text and design elements. I still want to push this further. Also featured are two commissions I have in the works, One completed (never claimed) commission and a personal Avett Brother water color illustration. Below is some of my source material, records, brushes and boxes (Maggie is moving out).

Grace's observation perch on the deck

Grace's observation perch on the deck

This old coffee table began as an unpainted pine Ikea table but quickly became distressed by my first two goldens, Diamond and Shakespeare. I later gave it a coat of stain and it has been living outside on the deck for a few years.

She is looking left to watch people walking by on the road.

We had some trouble yesterday and are still waiting to see the final result. This summer has been a bad one for neighbours choosing to light fires either for decoration/nostalgia or to get rid of gardening residue. Either way if the wind cooperates, the cottage turns into a smokehouse. My sister has asthma and the smoke bothers her a great deal. Two days ago, the wind angle and the smoke worked together for maximum effect and to counter its effect she put on a particle mask. I finally went over and told the neighbour that the smoke was really bothering us and her specifically. He apologized and doused it. It is amazing how smoke clings. I will long remember her with mask on taping garbage bags to cover the window air conditioner unit since it was right in line with the smoke to prevent more infiltration. At the end of the evening she put the mask in the waste basket in the bathroom.

Yesterday, while my sister was out working in the garden, Grace got annoyed to be left inside, began barking a great deal. My sister came in and found half of the mask on the floor and some other stuff from the garbage. The mask is mainly paper with a cloth elastic band to go around the back of your head, and has two tiny staples to hold that band in place. It also has a a thin malleable metal band which is there so you can bend it over the bridge of your nose to ensure a tight fit. She looked everywhere but no elastic band, staples or metal strip could be found. Conclusion: Grace ate them.

So off to the vet. We brought along an intact mask to show the vet. Xray showed the staples. No sign of the metal strip. But Grace’s stomach was full of food and it might have concealed it. Bottom line, if she starts vomiting, we are in trouble and likely she will need surgery. Or she may simply pass these things through her system.

Sometimes owning a dog can be very distressing.

Today we will buy a new waste basket for the bathroom, one with a lid that can be locked.

We still have a baby lock on the handles of the doors of the cupboard under the kitchen sink where we store cleaning supplies, like Windex and Comet. As a puppy she found that plastic thing interesting and gnawed on it a little. I must confess I feel a sense of triumph whenever I manage to unlock the baby lock to get in there.

Grace seems fine. God I hope she is going to be allright.
